The winter isolation of Prince Edward Island was partially lifted in 1827 when Prince Edward Island's first ice boat began carrying passangers and mail between the island and New Brunswick. The boats ran until car ferries took their place almost 100 years later. This service ran out of Cape Traverse, which has a memorial to it.
